2WD Short Course Truck Shootout

HPI Blitz RTR

This is the Blitz 2WD Electric RTR Short Course Truck from HPI. The HPI Blitz uses nothing but the finest grade, high-impact nylon plastic on the most critical areas of the truck – from the bumpers to the super beefy arms and everything in between. HPI’s industry known strength and durability makes the Blitz friendly for all – be it an R/C newcomer, or the skilled competitor.

Specifications:

  • Length: 548mm
  • Width: 296mm
  • Height: 200mm
  • Wheelbase: 329mm (adjustable)
  • Weight: 2100 g (approximate weight)
  • Motor: 15T Firebolt
  • Speed Control: SC-15
  • Radio:AE 2.4 ghz

Handling

Matt – (2.5) Slow steering response, very wide turns. Handles rough sections of track without sending the truck off course
Kevin – (2) Stock steering seemed a little tired. Very slow response. Cornered ok when you compensate for slow steering
Jarodd – (2)
Jim – (3) Truck was very loose with stock Blitz tires. Would not turn in well (too slow).
Average Score: 2.375

Jumping Ability

Matt – (3) Even tempered off jumps, consistently level to a touch nose up, but could easily level it off with a tap of the brakes
Kevin – (3) Seemed to jump ok, not the lightest of the bunch
Jarodd – (2) Jumped nose high
Jim – (3) Jumped well as long as you drove in straight. would not bottom out, Blitz shocks work well
Average Score: 2.75

Speed

Matt – (3) Top speed wasn’t as high as the others, but had good punch out of the corners and over the jumps
Kevin – (2) Slow compared to the rest of the fleet, may have been geared too high for this track
Jarodd – (2)
Jim – (3) Low traction hurt speed all around the track. I did have a couple of laps where the truck stayed straight and had lots of speed on the straights
Average Score: 2.5

Wrenchability

Matt – (3) Nothing looks overly difficult to get to
Kevin – (3) Seems straight forward
Jarodd – (3) Laid out well
Jim – (3) Easy to work on
Average Score: 3

Durability

Matt – (3) Truck held up well during my run. Wrecked it a few times over the jumps, and it came back for more
Kevin – (3) radio was glitching, fixed with a capacitor (likely due to failing servo)
Jarodd – (2) weak looking arms
Jim – (3) glitchy radio, possible servo failure or near failure. needs servo upgrade for sure
Average Score: 2.75

Notes

Matt – tire upgrade a must, servo upgrade a must
Kevin – second to least favorite
Jim – I’ve always had a soft spot for this truck. I think with upgrades on servo, steering rack and tires the truck would be very competitive

not a bad write up. i dont agree with everything nor do i disagree with everything. come on…. the slash beat the blitz ??? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Richard Decker says:

I agree with you George, I had to remind HSG that a Blitz won the 100 lap indoor LOSI race this past winter…LOL, all kidding aside, a very good article, very detailed and insightful.

  3. Hispeedguy says:

Well, to be fair, I think the servo in the Blitz was getting ready to give up, so the steering was pretty slow and sluggish. I ran the that same RTR Blitz on the carpet at Buddy Boys and CRC last winter in stock form and w/ a 17.5 Novak BL system and Savox 1258 servo. I couldn’t get it to turn very good then either ๐Ÿ™‚
Fun factor was very high on all 5 though.

  4. Matt says:

It was a total blast doing the test. Testing different vehicles is always subjective. We were basing our opinions on how those particular trucks performed. If my SC10 were the one we tested with it would have been a very different story.

This is a very good write up of these vehicles for someone new entering this hobby or anyone wanting to buy another rc car. If you guys need help when you do the 4wd I would love to participate. I think it is awesome that you guys did this. I am not the best but I have been in this sport racing for 18yrs. Again keep up the good work this is very useful information. JR
