How to: Remove Glued Tires – Baking

Ever break a wheel or strip a hex and wish you could get that tire off to reuse it? Well here’s your answer. This trick will allow you to remove your tire from the rim. The rim should still be usable unless like in my case, the wheel is damaged and the reasoning behind debonding. The foam insert is likely compromised and should probably be thrown out. Note that this trick only works with Nylon rims. ABS plastic wheels will warp (like those included in Tamiya kits).

In this case I am baking my AKA Enduro tire off of my stock SC104x4 wheel that has a stripped wheel hex.

Instructions
1. Remove the racks from the oven, except for a single rack placed in the middle.

2. Pre-heat the oven to 325 degrees F.

3. Place some foil flat on the oven rack, then put the RC tires on the foil. (I placed foil on a cookie sheet for easier removal)

4. Bake the tires for 15 minutes. (Keep an eye on them, never leave the oven unattended)

5. Put on a pair of heavy gloves. The tires will be very hot, so make sure the
gloves are thick enough that the heat won’t burn through them.

6. Take the tires out of the oven. Pull the tire away from the rim. Discard the
foam inside the tire.

*If the tire is still stuck in places, place it back on the foil and bake it for
another five minutes, then try again.

Voila. Done. Tire successfully removed from the wheel. Before attempting to reglue the tire to a new rim I would use a sanding drum on a dremel to remove some of the glue residue on the tire bead.

Special Thanks to Jarodd Goedel for the instructions.

*Please be careful when using the oven. If you are a youth, ask a parent for assistance. RC Soup is not responsible for any damages from using this guide or it’s instructions.
