VRC Pro – Hands on, Review, and Giveaway!

The Cost

VRC is subscription based. Even though it installs onto your computer, it syncs up with your account and you must pay to play. There are several different subscription levels. I’ll copy them from their website below (at time of writing). Don’t let the cost deter you. From my experience, it is well worth the cost, being able to REALLY practice driving. If you look at 80% of our Meet The Pros articles, most of the drivers we have interviewed tell you Practice is one of the best things you can do to get better as a racer. This program offers that ability, with no vehicle costs, gas to get to the track, maintenance, or broken parts.

Trial membership- FREE TRY OUT
The purpose of the trial membership is to try out the VRC PRO software and services for a period of 30 days. You will have access to a basic set of public tracks with spec level cars and components of all the brands, in each category. These cars have lower performance and restricted set-up adjustments. A trial membership subscription cannot be renewed and your account will be set inactive at the end of the trial period. If you like VRC Pro then you can buy a Lite license or upgrade to a full membership to continue racing.

Lite license – OCCASIONAL USERS: PAY 1 TIME & BUY EXTRA STUFF
The Lite license gives you 1 full year racing at a very low price. You have access to a basic set of public tracks with spec level cars and components of all the brands, in each category. Additional cars, components and tracks can be purchased if you want. These purchases are made with vโ‚ฌ (virtual cash), which cannot be earned by Lite members and need to be purchased in the eshop. Lite members cannot build a loyalty discount (up to 30%) and do not have the default 20% full member content discount. The Lite license is perfect if you want a full year of racing and pay only for what you use. You can upgrade to a full membership at any time, which is ideal if you are using VRC Pro regularly and want new cars, parts or tracks on a regular basis.

Full membership – REGULAR USERS: PAY MONTHLY & GET CHEAP/FREE EXTRA STUFF
The full membership will give you access to all the public tracks and common tracks, the spec cars and components, and the high performance Intercept brand car and components. You can purchase additional tracks, components and accessories using vโ‚ฌ (virtual cash). These vโ‚ฌ are kept in your account wallet to be able to make instant in-game and website purchases of digital content. vโ‚ฌ can be earned in the game or purchased in the e-shop. Full members have a default 20% content discount can also build a loyalty discount (up to 30%) for all eshop purchases, incl. subscriptions.

OFF-ROAD is something available on top of the original licenses. Off-road packages do include a normal subscription though.

The Requirements

Like any PC program/game, VRC Pro will run as well as your computer will let it. The minimum system requirements aren’t crazy, so if your computer is a little bit older, it should still work. They are listed below.

Min system requirements

– Windows XP SP2
– .Net framework 2.0
– Hyperthreaded Intel CPU, AMD Athlon 64 CPU
– 256 MB Pixel Shader 2.0 graphics adapter
– 2 GB system RAM
– 2 GB free hard disk space
– Soundblaster compatible soundcard
– DSL internet connection (512kbit/s)
– VRC USB adapter or controller (optional)

That said… I’ve tried this program on 3 machines. On my old desktop (Athlon 64, Win XP, 256mb Graphics card, 4 GB RAM) it worked OK. The computer was around 5 years old and eventually suffered a hardware failure during this testing period (not caused by VRC). I had to turn off some of the higher level details like dust/smoke, anti-aliasing, clouds, etc.. but I was able to run it smoothly. I probably could have gotten away with running those settings on, but it really was a tired system.

I also tried an Alienware M11X Gaming Laptop. This thing ran everything on max settings flawless, and would have been awesome to get an R/C fix on the go. Perfect for vacation or hotel room racing. Another thing I did with it, was use the laptop’s HDMI port, and ran VRC Pro hooked up to a 47″ 120hz LCD TV. This was awesome, as I was able to stand in the middle of my living room and race like a champ on the big screen. It had one glaring fault though. Marshalling. In order to fix yourself on the track if you get out of shape, you have to hit spacebar. In this case, the laptop was on an end table about 10 feet away from me. Running over to mash the spacebar got old FAST. If you had a buddy/child/wife that was willing to “marshall” for you and hit the button for you every time you lawn dart your short course truck, then this is an AWESOME option. I did notice a slight performance drop over the HDMI though, and probably because TV’s generally don’t support the refresh rate of higher end PC monitors. It was a minor lag, but noticeable. It wasn’t enough to take away from the experience. It’d be awesome if VRC found a way to support some sort of 3rd channel button on the radio being able to be used for the Spacebar command.

Lastly, I built a new PC and have been using that for the past month or so. This runs VRC with NO issues on max settings. In fact, I can run VRC Pro, have internet radio running, with email/chat windows open, and Photoshop launched in the background and still have silky smooth gaming. This is no $1,000 PC either. Basically I’m running Windows 7 Pro, on a Quad core AMD processor, 1gb EVGA video card, on 8GB of Ram, all with the OS and VRC Pro installed on a 6gb/s Solid State Drive. I love it.

What kind of Racing can you do?

VRC Pro promises to eventually support all types of racing classes. Currently though, you can run on-road (road course) and Off-Road. There are a variety of tracks. A few come unlocked when you join, the rest you need to purchase with vEuros (virtual $$). Below is a features list from their site about the tracks and racing in general.

Tracks:

  • WORLD RENOWNED CHAMPIONSHIP TRACKS
  • ULTRA REALISTIC GRAPHICS, LIKE BEING ON THE TRACK
  • 2 DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR EACH TRACK
  • 3 PUBLIC TRACKS FOR TRIAL MEMBERS
  • 6 COMMON TRACKS + 3 PUBLIC FOR FULL MEMBERS
  • 11 PURCHASABLE TRACKS
  • NEW TRACKS COMING EACH MONTH (TOTAL 40+)
  • INCLUDING EXCLUSIVE CUSTOM DESIGNED VRC-TRACKS

Competition:

  • 4 RACING CLASSES, 1:10 & 1:12 ELECTRIC, 1:10 & 1:8 NITRO
  • MODIFIED AND SPEC CLASSES
  • SET TRACK AND RACE CONDITIONS
  • OFF-LINE PRACTICE MODE WITH QUALIFY AND RACE FORMAT
  • TIME TRIAL – BEST DAY, WEEK, MONTH or BEST EVER RESULT PER TRACK
  • OFFICIAL RACE EVENTS, INTERNATIONAL AND CLUB LEVEL
  • CLASS RANKINGS & GENERAL RANKINGS
  • EARN RANKING POINTS AND VIRTUAL PRIZE MONEY

Multiplayer:

  • RACE ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE
  • 10 CAR MULTI-PLAYER OVER INTERNET AND LAN
  • QUALIFY AND FINAL RACING FORMATS
  • SET WARM-UP, QUALIFY & RACE DURATION
  • COLLISION CAN BE SWITCHED ON / OFF
  • SET TRACK CONDITIONS, TEMPERATURE & TRACTION
  • SET RACING DIRECTION

I attempted most configurations I could find.

  • 1/12 on-road on carpet (electric)
  • 1/12 on-road on pavement (electric)
  • 1/10 on-road on pavement (electric)
  • 1/10 on-road on carpet (electric)
  • 1/8 nitro on-road on pavement
  • 1/10 nitro on-road on pavement
  • 4WD Short Course on the indoor track
  • 4WD Short Course on the outdoor track
  • Variety of classes on the “open” parking lot

I’d have to say my favorites are 4WD Short Course and 1/12 on-road on carpet. I would have never expected to like on-road, but I’m having a lot of fun with it. Being that one of the premier on-road chassis manufactures is 45 minutes from me (CRC Racing), I might actually give it a try in real life after I log some more hours of the VRC version. VRC Pro seems like a great way for someone to try a class outside of their comfort zone, without the huge investment. Who knows, you might find a new segment of r/c you didn’t try yet.

Great review. I was holding judgment off for the off road of VRC until I saw someone like yourself recommend it. Lots of screen shots too, helped me really make up my mind that I want to try VRC.

  7. Eric Norris says:

Review was great. Off-road looks awesome!!

  8. John Payer says:

Great review! I don’t stay up on a lot of stuff like this and to be truthful I had no idea it even existed. Physics of the game look amazing!

  9. Mike Kelley says:

This looks like the best way to spend time on rainy day.
But when will the RC guys start to build stuff for us MAC users.
I havnt owned a PC in 12 years. Its hard to spend $400 plus dollars on a laptop just to play one of the coolest Rc games or tune my ESC.

  10. I am very excited to give VRC a shot the Offroad tracks look awesome.

  11. Ben Hatcher says:

I still give my copy of RealRace V2 a go now and again but it’d be great to try something newer. I wish their free trial included the off-road but I don’t think it does.

  12. Lance seme says:

I would like to give this a try with my remote, I tried it the other day with the keyboard and it was disappointing. Your review has made me think twice about uninstalling it!

  13. Clay Berry says:

Awesome review! VRC has come a long way from back in the day! Alot of people give them a hard time, but I think they have done a great job for such a small staff. Keep up the great work!

  15. Tony Feliciti says:

VRC is great. The on-road feels a lot more “real” to me. The short course is fun, but it definately feels more like a game and less like a sim – for instance, traction is constant throughout – rather than just on the line. I’ve been playing VRC for about 4-5 months this year. Very fun.

  16. MKIIINA says:

I recently picked up VRC to test out how it compared to RCSIM and its great. I live local to Mike’s and race there on a weekly basis and its amazing the detail they worked in. Look forward to seeing 2wd buggy and 1/8 scale!

  17. MattS-Kyosho says:

Great review by RCSoup – I got to see some folks using the simulator at a race last weekend and I really want to give it a shot – but maybe I’ll wait first to see if I get lucky!

  18. Brett says:

  19. ron zachary says:

great review rc soup… that looks like the real deal!

  20. Mark says:

Looks like a lot of fun and a great way for drivers not to get rusty from not racing over the winter break.

  21. Joshua Deaver says:

I have tried this out since reading your review. I must say this is a really good sim. I,like you, wish there were more options in the offroad portion. I know that there are plans to have more. I would like to thank rc soup for the review and vrc for the chance to win these prizes.

  22. Sluggo says:

It would be awesome to give this a try. With the recent birth of my third child, I can’t get to the track as much as I would like. VRC could be my ticket to get track time without leaving home.

  23. Flipside says:

I was using VRC when it first launched with just nitro 1/10, and 1/8th cars and I oved it back then. I even had the first blue usb adapter before. I really liked it alot and have been trying to get a copy of windows for my mac so I can get back on it.

  24. Christopher Sheen says:

Very interesting I’m definitely going to have to give this a try! Thanks for the review!

  25. Ken O says:

Great review ! Been waiting for VRC to go offroad ! Thanks VRC for the give away and the chance to play this great sim for free !

  26. Zach Marcolesco says:

Wow, looks great! Wish there was a cheaper license for those of us who don’t care about on-road stuff. ๐Ÿ˜€ I might try it out! Thanks VRC for creating something for people on a tight budget that can’t go out and slam their trucks into the ground every single weekend. Couple bucks a month? I spend more than that on replacement parts anyway. ๐Ÿ˜€

  27. Cooper Hurt says:

I have only heard things about this and I would love to try it to get my own opinion on it. From what you said I think it will be great!

  28. todd thompson says:

Really like the idea here, my son is turning into a pretty good driver and this could be another ‘tool’ in our pit box.
I could use the virtual driving time also, stinking 10 year old beats me almost every race….
Thanks for the great work, value you’re reviews immensely.
    Thanks, Todd

  29. MiRatlhed says:

WOW! Never knew this even existed until RC Soup let me know. It really looks awesome and I know I can use all the practice I can fit in. I love how you can use my regular racing transmitter with the program.

Awesome stuff!! Big thanks to VRC for donating so many subscriptions and adapters for us to win.

Oh looks great. Especially around here when winter comes.. i can race all day and not wreck or have any wear an tear on ur stuff..

  31. Mike Darnell says:

We have customers standing in line at the shop waiting for their chance to give it a try. If you are in the Dallas area, stop by and give it a try. You can drive our track online and then step out to the track for some real time racing action.

  32. Paul says:

Looks like a great way to practice when the closest track is an $80 round trip!

  45. Flipside says:

LOVE IT! The Offroad is soo nice!

  47. Scott Morich says:

I tryed VRC once at a Hobby shop and really liked it alot. But not being a computer guy and not knowing my specs I never used it again. Now that I am racing I think it would be a great tool to use for practice and setup help. I really liked your review and am considering maybe trying it out again someday soon. Thanks RC Soup for a awsome review and giveaway.

  48. Nick says:

I have been waiting for the offroad version to come out for 3 years and really like what what they did. Great job guys!

They emailed me first thing this morning, I had it setup in an hour, waiting for the usb link now

  56. Kevin says:

Winners have been notified. Only got SOME replies.. so might have another winner. Formal announcement coming soon.

  57. heretic says:

When I woke up this morning I would never have guessed I could one day want to drive a short course truck. Good job VRC.

  58. Robert Bailey says:

VRC is Awesome. I started RC’ing about 2 years ago I wish i would have had VRC then. I think my skills are improving after only 1 day with this. Great tool to learn more about your driving and your car setup. I’m still a newb at the track in real life I’ve only raced on road about 5 or 6 track days. I have some on road races coming up with competition that has been into it for years. I feel that with some serious practice time on VRC I will be a better driver soon. I hope to relly work on my skills and get out of the C main and maybe even into the A main. Thanks VRC
