Project Overkill: RJ Speed Digger

Here we are, late at night, in the shop of AJS Machine. Aron Smith (owner), graciously agreed to help us solve this issue by building us a sweet brace. The issue we were having is that there is nothing supporting the lower section of the kingpin. When an undue amount of force is applied to the wheel, like during a tumble (as seen in the videos), it stesses the kingpin to the point of breakage. Our solution was to make a brace that connected the 2 longer kingpins (from the Legends kit), that would split that stress load.

Aron takes super accurate measurements.

A little shot of the part being made.

Some test fitment. As you can see, this part lives up to the name of our project. Overkill. It’s 1/4″ thick 6061 aluminum bar stock!

To further prevent ANY side to side movement (or give) on the kingpins, we grooved the brace so that it slides over the chassis plates. This thing isn’t going ANYWHERE.

The AJS Machine brace is over twice as thick as the top plate!

It also does not effect steering radius at all. No clearance issues.

We polished it up a little before putting it on for final assembly. Bling!

Here she is installed, AJS Machine sticker and all.

Next we test this baby for Part II of Project Overkill! (More video ahead)
