Team RCE Slash 4×4 LCG Carbon Fiber Conversion

Below are all the contents of the package laid out on my trusty CowRC Jumbo Work Mat. I love how the hardware is separated by size and type in that bag. It made the build a lot easier. The carbon fiber is 3mm thick. Really all of these parts are so beautifully machined it left me a bit awe struck. Pay attention to how artfully machined the bulkheads are when we get to them.

Along with the above parts, it comes with 3 CAD type drawings, a decal sheet, and a chassis protector (to keep that carbon lookin’ purdy). The kit doesn’t come with a formal step-by-step set of instructions, and having never worked on a slash 4×4 in general before this article, I pretty much just winged it. It wasn’t bad though. Team RCE has all the screw locations numbered in the CAD drawing, with a chart saying the size and screw type required for that location. It was easy enough to figure out.

For convenience, I taped these sheets to my wall in front of me for quick reference and a tidier work space.

Alrighty.. Another shot of the stock slash before we get under way.. say goodbye to traction rolling!

First we take out the electronics (this means removing the screws that hold in the VXL ESC and the top of the receiver box).

Next we remove the Traxxas 2075 stock servo (4 screws). I removed the receiver and reinstalled the cover on the receiver box (we won’t be needing it).

We also have to remove the screw for the servo horn from underneath.

Next up.. removing the motor. Again, having never worked on a slash (if it weren’t for installing these electronics into the roller in the first place), this part would have been a little baffling. The Slash 4×4 uses a unique motor mount where the whole plate pivots for gear mesh adjustment. Anyways, in order to get to it, we first have to remove the gear cover. This is just one screw and then it sort of pops off if you pry on it a little.

Gear cover removed.
