Traxxas Slash 4×4 LCG chassis Shootout!

Team RCE

As you’ll see in the data sheet for the T-RCE below, this was the lightest truck of the bunch. 5.77 lbs. This truck uses carbon fiber and magnesium (30% lighter than aluminum) for most of it’s parts, so it makes sense that it would be the lightest.

Here is the setup sheet for the Team RCE chassis as it was run in the shootout. This setup was probably still a little off, and this truck is not really designed to use stock shocks. We messed with the setup to get it the best we could with stock components.

How did the Team RCE Slash 4×4 do on the track?

Handling

Matt – (4) Very agile. Turned on a dime. Very twitchy though, had to use less throttle on corner exit to keep the rear end under the truck
Kevin – (4) Way better than stock. A little loose in the rear. Very good turn in.
Jarodd – (4) Off power steering was very good. On power was predictable. Corner exit was good and able to get on the power quickly. Handles the bumps well
Jim – (4) Excellent turn in ability. Corner speed very good as long as you used a moderate throttle input. Good over small bumps
Dumper – (4) Turns in well

Average Score: 4

Jumping Ability

Matt – (3.5) Jumped ok, as long as you hit the jump square. If you were off, it was difficult to correct
Kevin – (4) Flies level. Good response to adjustments in the air
Jarodd – (3) Jumps with nose down, small jumps it flies level
Jim – (4) Predictable using throttle input to keep truck level. Bottomed out on larger jumps
Dumper – (3) Feels ok. Inconsistent due to ESC/motor

Average Score: 3.5

Speed

Matt – (4) This felt like a fast truck, definitely held back by electronics
Kevin – (3.5) Slow due to VXL. Can’t run the lines the fast guys do
Jarodd – (2) Lacks speed on the straight, but has good low end torque
Jim – (3) Limited speed compared to other trucks, but good speed over all
Dumper – (3) Slow

Average Score: 3

Durability

Matt – (4) Nothing broke while I ran this truck
Kevin – (4) Lost a tire at end of run – fault of idiot pit man (me)
Jarodd – (5) No breakage
Jim – (4) Nothing broke
Dumper – (4) It did not break

Average Score: 4.2

Driver Comments

Matt: Overall this truck is very capable. This felt like an Associated SC10 4×4 to me. Just as much agility.
Kevin: Fast and nimble- reminds me of an SC10 4×4 as far as handling with a faster spinup of drivetrain. Wicked light, and it feels that way on the track.
Jim: I liked the RCE. Truck can be driven aggressively and stay smooth. Seemed to bottom out on bigger jumps but handled the stutter bumps very well. On full throttle blast it would get loose.
Dumper: Watering the track helped this truck a lot. Seems to prefer a high bite track to a loose track.

Additional notes: We were told on several occasions that this truck would not be on it’s A-Game with the stock shocks. They do not allow enough droop, and have an overall poor performance. This is a light truck, that is very sensitive to setup tweaks. I’m sure the stock shocks on this are a huge part of why the truck handles like it does, as they don’t allow the chassis to work as it was designed.

I have the SSC and I LOVE it. My first observations were a lot like yours. It feels VERY stable and planted. IT has certainly converted my slash into a whole new machine. Right now, I run the Ultras with TiN coated shock shafts, Aluminum caps and RPM 2 stage pistons. It seems to work pretty well. I’m waiting on a center diff but it works like a dream even with the slipper. I can’t wait to get going with the C.diff.

I just have to install a Tenshock SC401 waiting to go into the SSC. With a Hobbywing SC8 controlling the VXL 3500 on stock gearing powered by a Gens Ace lipo, the car came off the track with the motor at 140F, lipo at 104F and ESC at around 100F in ambient temps of 95F! To me, that is spectacular. All in all, I’d suggest this chassis in a heartbeat.

You guys did some nice testing and I’m looking forward to phase 2. The SSC and TRCE (in particular) have given the slash 4×4 a new lease of life. I wonder how the Chuckworks will do with more tuning…

id like to see these taken to the next level.

Great write-up!! I would like to see a shoot-out with a budget electronics setup, like a HW sc8 120a ESC with a tenshock sc401 or sc411 4000kv motor and a high end setup Tekin rx8 ESC and pro 4 4000kv motor. It would be nice to uprade the shocks to Losi, sc10 4×4 or PL powershocks

i would defenently like to see a electronic’s upgrade for the chassis and could the pro line pro track kit be included in the future tests?
