Axial SCX10 Trail Honcho Kit review

At 5 mph, you aren’t likely to break this truck. About the only way you could is if you try scaling a hill, and the truck cartwheels all the way down. I didn’t have a single break while testing this truck. I even let my daughters drive it, without fear of them breaking anything.

Value When you go with a kit, you have to purchase the electronics separately. depending on what you go with, this can get costly. The kit itself will hold its value over time, though, earning it 4 spoons.
Appearance One of the greatest features of this truck is its scale appearance. In the “trail truck” segment, that is one of the most coveted aspects.
Performance I was hard pressed to find an obstacle this truck couldn’t tackle. It had two weak points, to me. One was the tendency to get stuck on its center support while traversing a tall obstacle. The second was the front bumper hindering approach angles to obstacles.
Durability Everything on this truck is meaty. From the aluminum wheel hexes (with seizure screw), steel universal joints in the axles, steel C-channel frame, Beadlock tires…this truck will hold up to abuse.
Would I buy again? I absolutely would buy this truck again. It was a fun kit to build, and is a fun truck to drive. You don’t need a track, just a pile of rocks, or a hiking trail, or maybe some snow in the driveway. It’s an overall crowd-pleaser.

Overall, I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

While scale appearance gets a 5 out of 5, the smallish tires can’t climb some taller obstacles. The chassis bottoms out too easily. With a 2.2″ tire upgrade, this truck can be amazing. However, putting the bigger tires on the kit detracts from the appearance. So its a trade-off. Having 1.9″ tires won’t in any way stop the fun, and should be the choice for all those wishing for as authentic a scale look as possible. However, for those that want a little more performance, and don’t mind the tires looking too big for the truck, go with a 2.2″ tire upgrade.

We hope you enjoyed the Axial SCX10 Trail Honcho kit build and review as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. On to the next!
