Victory R/C Speedway – RC Soup’s first time at this Clay Oval Track

Alright guys and gals.. here’s RCSoup.com’s exclusive interview with Scott Victory:

How long has Victory R/C Speedway been open, and what made you want to start the track in the first place?

This is our 4th season. I guess it all started with the first rc boat I picked up, it ended up not working so I traded it for a truck and started racing. It was something I enjoyed very much and seemed to be very fun and exciting. I liked it so much I became addicted. 1 or 2 nights a week was not enough, so construction of the track began.

Was it something you started on your own, or was there a consistent group of guys coming to help out?

I had help from a few guys that felt the same way about racing and just wanted a hand in starting something new and exciting. I’d like to give a big SHOUT out to Matt Kitts, a friend of mine who was here at the beginning. I hope all the guys who were here from the beginning know how much their help was appreciated!

Your facility is very nice already, but what do you have planned for the future? Anything you plan to add or improve down the road?

At this point, we are really kind of still stunned at the growth of the speedway so far… With that being said..We at Victory RC Speedway feel that there are always things that can be improved.

I know you hold a couple larger races there, can you tell me a little more about them?

We were fortunate enough to have held the 2010 WDRA Summer Nationals, were race #4 in 2011 and are currently schedualed to host race #8 on August 4th in 2012. The WRDA is a traveling series that incorporates a number of different facilities. This allows people from across the East to be part of the great racing experience.

I like that your track is heavily into EDM’s. I raced them 10 years ago at Walt’s Hobby. Do you find class changes from year to year? This seems to be an issue at other tracks, where the classes get diluted. I like that you have enough entries to run 3 full classes of EDM based on different speed/skill level.

Yes I find that including the racers into the class decision making is vital in keeping the class structures together. They are the ones coming to race. Without them it is just a track. I try to get as much input from our racers as I can. After all I was a racer before I was a track owner.

Have you seen big shifts? Was there ever a Mini class for Mini Late Models? Or a Losi Slider class? Are you as disappointed as we are to see the only mainstream manufacturer discontinue every product in their dirt oval line?

Oh yes, we ran the 1/ 10 sliders here last year. Not so much this year.. I’m really not sure if that is due to the change in racing surface or to the discontinuation of product. I really hate to see any dirt oval product “that is working” discontinued.

What inspired you to run the water in with a golf cart? I’ve not seen that done before but it looked like it works really well. (Video below)

I have been to a number of racing facilites, each maintain there surface differently. I have tried to pay attention to what works and what doesn’t…After experimenting for a few years the cart seems to work the water down into the surface the most efficiently.. and it is fun to drive :).

Very cool. I like that you go the extra mile to make the track the best it can be. I was impressed with the racing surface.

Thank you. I try to make it the way I would like it if I was racing on it.

How long have you, yourself been racing?

I started probably around 5 years ago. This is the first season I have raced here. I usually don’t but with the addition of the Mod class… it kind of opened it up. I just wanted to try that class and see if I could.

(Regarding the above reply, this will give you an idea just how fast Mod EDM is. The pink blur is Jeff Hotaling’s Mod EDM. Video does not do the speed justice…)

What’s the reason for not racing? Because you are running the show most of the time?

Yes, I find I am very busy if I am doing my job. Sometimes… it’s hard to remember I am at work. That is the best part of this whole thing to me.. that I really found something I truly love to do.

Awesome. What is the most popular class week to week (average)?

I would have to say 17.5 DODC Outlaw Edm (average) it changes from week to week. The Pro Truck class and 13.5 DODC Outlaw Sprint are really close also. MOD EDM is climbing very fast as well.

Is there anything else you wanted to note or mention about the facility?

Just that we are honored to have the support and following from the RC community that we have. I would personally like to thank all of our racers, I believe a track is only as good as the racers that participate.. Here at Victory RC Speedway we feel that we have some of the Best Racers in the sport! I would like to thank RC SOUP for all that they do to keep this sport going.. You Guys are doing a great job.

He’s not kidding. There were a bunch of fast guys running up there when we went. We have 2 fresh Meet the Pros interviews coming up after this post. Not to mention Steve Pemberton, Joel Winnicki, and Hevis were all in the house that night!

Jeff Hotaling meets Hevis!

I hope you enjoyed our little writeup on the track. We had a great time, and cannot wait to go back. I encourage anyone into dirt oval racing to try to make it out to Victory RC Speedway! They also have a Facebook group that a lot of the racers frequent.
